Transmission Error

When you take photographs and the images don¡¯t turn out as you intended, you are bound to delete the images. In the case of the Transmission Error series, however, deleting the image files can hardly happen during the shoot: Even the poorly shot images are saved until the transmission of all the images has been completed. In the Transmission Error series, my work can never be planned and every single image is completely unpredictable. Although I¡¯m the one who takes the photographs of those images, I can¡¯t really control the result of my work. The images are accidentally created by the mechanical error of my camera for unknown cause but it¡¯s too early to jump into the conclusion that they¡¯re trash. Some might think I should discard these images assuming that they failed in giving the effect of representation, which is the theoretical function of photography. However, I consider the phenomenon of these errors as the object of new creation. Since the mechanical error converts part of original image into something irrecognizable during the transmission process, both figurative and non-figurative characteristics are all mixed up in one image and thanks to these two different parts that coexist in the image, my work is reborn as a whole new piece. The Transmission Error series has affected the way I think in many ways and broadened my perspective by showing me a variety of new possibilities to create images.
