The dog instinctively claims territory for itself through the act of urination. This behavior is often called ¡°marking,¡± denoting that the dog is showing itself, or its mark, to other dogs while also leaving a clue for itself so that it can find its way back to where it came from. Generally, the dog ¡°marks¡± its territory outside rather than inside, because external areas are social spaces where the dog must be alongside others. The smell of the urine provides information about its size, gender, and even nature, and some dogs try to flaunt their status by urinating higher than others. Dogs have even been known to urinate while doing a hand-stand with both legs up in the air, presumably in order to give the impression that they are bigger than their counterparts.
This exhibition, then, is my study of personal territory and personal position in the frame of social structure, themes exemplified by the image of a dog beginning to do its business while sniffing the urine of other dogs. I have been variously classified as a person, with different modifiers being applied to me depending on the time and the place; I have, for example, been described as an Asian girl living in Europe, a foreign student, and a woman in her late 30s with few childbearing years remaining. In light of this, I feel I should mark my territory in front of the public¡¯s gaze, since issues of ¡°territory¡± begin the moment one steps foot outside. At the same time, however, these issues end once you are back home in an area/space you own, and then you feel ashamed of yourself for having urinated while doing a hand-stand.
As such, this show combines works from two different times and places. Half of the works were created in Paris from 2006 to 2007, and half of them were created in Seoul from 2012 to 2013. The former works are about positioning myself as an alien/foreigner in France and performing a role appropriate to that situation. The more recent works, on the other hand, focus more on my role as a woman in her mid-to-late 30s in Korean society, which has recently begun to influence me anew. The demands placed upon Korean women especially are pointed out, and the meaning of those demands is approached through my personal history as well as my perspective as a general member of society.
